Horror invades the lives of people under one roof

At first glance, The Invasion (2020) eerily resembles a fever dream lived out during the worst of the Covid-19 lockdowns. What appears to be a cross-section view of the divergent lives lived in many rooms under a roof - one stacked on the other, juxtaposed, intimately aligned - quickly unravels to reveal a complex choreography that binds the separate lives together.
All horrors are shared, and all scenes of trauma, ecstasy, and ennui coexist in a surreal balance under one roof. At the heart of it all is the persistent anxiety of an impending collapse, contamination, and ultimately, change.

"This film lies at the intersection of many forms,” explained Dante Rustav, the Uzbek director and writer behind the experimental short. “This project combines documentary filmmaking and animation.” While the film feels pertinent to our times following the collective devastation of Covid-19, Rustav’s debut short was not created in response to the pandemic (which came after)...
