Jon Lucien - Hello Like Before

From Allmusic.com: "This cover of a 1975 Bill Withers classic also happens to be one of Jon Lucien's best tracks as well. In 1976 the two were label mates and this was issued on Lucien's Premonition, the follow up to his much loved Song For My Lady. Although commercial considerations were taken into account at Columbia, the label basically let Lucien be himself. "Hello Like Before" seems to just pick up on the lush sound and style he'd been doing since his 1969 debut. Boy, does this work. The Withers original was good, but this arguably beats it. The song is all about former lovers meeting one another unexpectedly. It's often the stuff of movies, books and television, but when it is committed to song, the effect can be very evocative. It is here as well. Although stylistically there isn't much difference between Withers and Lucien's version, the motivation seems to take divergent paths. Withers seemed to play it cool, a little shy, much like his persona. For this version, Lucien lays on the charm and then some. The melody truly suits his voice and he deftly brings a longing and romance to the mix. The mid '70s found Lucien's vocals improving from album to album and this catches him on a particularly good session."
