Municipal Service - Portland, Oregon - Early '40s - Produced by city employees (silent)

This movie, from the Portland City Auditor website, contains some interesting scenes of Portland in the '40s, including municipal floats in the Rose Parade, police and firemen demonstrating some of their equipment and abilities, and various street, river, and aerial shots.

From the film's titles:
"Good government performs many public services for the protection, health, and safety of its citizens--many of which are unfamiliar, some even unknown to them. This picture was entirely directed, filmed, edited, and titled by City employees. Your city officials are pleased to present for your approval...MUNICIPAL SERVICE"

"An aerial view of downtown Portland--showing the beautiful Willamette River and its graceful bridges--is an inspiring sight."

"Swan Island has served well, but aviation has advanced beyond its facilities. Today the mile-square Portland Airport, located on the Columbia River at North East 47th Avenue, is Portland's contribution to aviation's progress."

"Portland's annual homage to the rose is climaxed by the Rose Festival Parade. These beautiful floral floats are your City Government's contribution to this pageant."

After the shots of the Rose Parade, Portland Police and Firemen demonstrate some of what they do, both on the River and on land. There are some street scenes and scenes of city crews cutting down trees.
