Magnitude 6.2 earthquake shakes part of northern Japan

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northern Japan early Monday near Sarabetsu on Hokkaido, according to monitoring agencies.

The quake occurred at a depth of about 81 kilometers, and officials reported no damage, injuries, or tsunami threat.

The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed it was outside the region covered by a recent megaquake advisory.

The event followed a stronger 7.7 offshore quake a week earlier that had raised heightened seismic concerns in northeastern Japan, the AP has reported.

Authorities said the current alert period is still set to end as scheduled.
