Walton on Trent A new 150m-long, three-span bridge North of HS2 Streethay 1 st April 2026

Construction is underway on a new 150m-long, three-span bridge and 1.5km bypass at Walton-on-Trent, near the former Drakelow Power Station, designed to replace the70-year-old single-track Bailey bridge. The project, which began in early 2025 with major construction proceeding through 2025, is expected to open in autumn 2026, aiming to ease traffic congestion.

Key Details of the New Bridge and Bypass:
Location: The new bridge crosses the River Trent, linking to a new 1.5km bypass road to improve traffic flow in the area.
Structure: The project includes a 150m-long, three-span bridge, with construction involving pile driving on both the Walton and Staffordshire sides.
Timeline: Work began in early 2025. A local councillor indicated in late 2025 that the project is on track for completion in autumn 2026.
Old Bridge Future: The existing, narrow Bailey bridge is planned to be converted into a pedestrian and cycle crossing once the new bridge is functional.
Cost and Development: The project is part of a larger £50 million infrastructure investment (including land costs) linked to the redevelopment of the former Drakelow Power Station.
Progress: As of late 2025, piling work was well underway with the pier construction for the new bridge.

This project has been long-awaited to resolve significant traffic bottlenecks caused by the restrictive, one-way, weight-limited bridge currently in use.
