A Wake-Up Call For Earth!
What if a rock from space exploded over your city — and no one saw it coming?
In 2013, that’s exactly what happened over Chelyabinsk, Russia
““It was really the wake-up call for Earth, saying, ‘Hey, these things can come from space, they can be big… and unpredictable.’”
For ten seconds, a 60 foot meteorite blazed across the sky, releasing the energy of half a million tons of TNT – about 30 times more powerful than Hiroshima
The shockwave injured over a thousand people and shattered thousands of windows.
We didn’t see it coming because it approached from the direction of the Sun, so was hidden from our telescopes.
It really said to the world…what if this thing had been several hundred foot across? It would've been pretty devastating.”
Now, NASA’s infrared telescopes can spot asteroids even when they come from the Sun’s direction — by detecting their heat, not light.
And missions like DART tested how to deflect asteroids,
“because it’s the big one, like the dinosaurs, that we want to see years before it hits us.”
Featuring Laurence Garvie
