Is the Middle East War Putting Ukraine's Air Defences in Danger?

In a CNN interview on April 23, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy raised a critical concern: a prolonged conflict involving Iran in the Middle East could directly impact Ukraine's ability to secure vital U.S. anti-missile weapons.

Zelenskiy explained that Ukraine currently acquires Patriot anti-ballistic missiles through the PURL programme — a NATO-backed initiative that allows member countries to finance weapons purchases for Kyiv. However, he stressed that U.S. production of these systems remains limited, meaning supply is already tight.

With the Middle East crisis intensifying demand for the same American-made defence systems, Zelenskiy warned that continued fighting — or delays in any ceasefire — could place Ukraine's missile defence packages "at risk."

On the diplomatic front, Ukraine is actively turning its battlefield experience into a strategic asset. After four years of countering Iranian-designed drones deployed by Russian forces, Ukraine has signed knowledge-sharing and training agreements with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates — nations now facing similar drone threats in their own region.

Zelenskiy confirmed Ukraine plans to expand these partnerships further, offering both technical expertise and training missions to other interested countries.

This development highlights how the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East are becoming increasingly interconnected — with shared weapons systems, shared threats, and now shared defence strategies shaping global security decisions.
