The documentary examining the lives of people on the dole in the UK focuses on Blackpool, where one in every four adults claims benefits outside the tourist season. Mother-of-six Julie has returned to the seaside town to look for work, but says she is never given a chance because she is overqualified, while 51-year-old Phillip has had to pawn his beloved Victorian silver jewellery and is forced to sell his mobility scooter to pay for food and electricity.

Single mum Liz is struggling to raise her one-year-old daughter Lily on £120 a week and things get worse when her benefits are almost cut in half after missing an appointment at social services because she was at the hospital.
