The Rochester-South Sudan Connection
On this edition of Need to Know Rochester, WXXI News launches the first installment of Schools for South Sudan. The special project focuses on the unique connection between Rochester and the world's youngest nation. A handful of area nonprofits are on the ground in South Sudan building schools, health clinics and providing clean water in remote villages. Their work is being supported by funds raised in the Greater Rochester area.
WXXI's Hélène Biandudi Hofer was in South Sudan reporting on the efforts of one organization with a mission to build schools in war-torn villages. The 6-part series, Schools for South Sudan, airs Thursdays at 8pm on Need to Know Rochester beginning January 23rd.
Also on the show -- a conversation on autism and "aging out." Guests Dr. Martha Mock and Dr. Susan Hyman of the University of Rochester discuss the challenges families face when kids with autism and other developmental disabilities transition into adulthood and lose certain federally mandated services. They also discuss services available to families in the Greater Rochester area. The conversation is part of WXXI's Dialogue on Disability, a partnership with the Al Sigl Community of Agencies and the Golisano Foundation.
For more information on the transition from childhood to adulthood for people with autism and other developmental disabilities, contact the Institute for Innovative Transition: 585-273-3783. Email general inquiries to: disabilityinfo@urmc.rochester.edu
For general autism information, contact the Rochester Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder: 1-855-508-8485 (Toll Free).
