Operation Biting – The 1942 Bruneval Raid on German Wűrzburg Radar
On the night of 27-28 February 1942 during the Second World War, there was a daring commando raid from England on a German Radar intallation at Bruneval in Northern France. It was called Opereation Biting.
The raid, an airbourne assult followed by a seabourne evacuation, was difficult but successful and resulted in significant parts being removed from the German Wűrzburg Radar installation there and transported back to England for examination by Radar Scientists and Engineers.
Our five minute clip about the raid is introduced by Dr Bill Penley CB CBE (1917-2017) who was one of the pioneering Radar Scientists at Worth Matravers on the South Coast of Dorset during the war.
The full 64 minute video about the pioneers of early Radar in Dorset from which the clip is taken, "Echoes of the Past", was filmed in 2010 by John Hale of Greenacre AV Productions and was originally published on DVD and is now available on YouTube at
