Traction alopecia is a kind of hair loss that happens over time. It happens by putting the hair under constant strain or tension. the constant tension in the particular area either pulls out the hair roots completely or causes the hair follicles to be inflamed. As time goes by, the damage caused by the follicles causes them to be atrophied, that is wasted away and if you do not put a stop to this problem, you will reach a point where they no longer [produce any hair at all. It is usually caused by one or more of the following. When you tie pony tails or pig tails or tight braids, cornrows, redlocks, extension single braids, hair weaves or waves attached with glue or clips tape. Certain hair clips or slides that hold the hair very tightly and are worn in the same position everyday. Headbands, even fabric ones are worn day after day. Tight hair pieces, tight cycling helmets that are worn frequently or for long stretches of time and tend to rub or pull repeatedly on the same area of hair. Repeated use of hair rollers, repeated pulling of hair with hand and this is an emotional condition called as trichotillomania. If you use or do any of the above, then you may find that the constant tension that causes has lead to areas of hair thinning usually around the temples or behind your ears. You may notice that the part of your hair looks wider. Ina nutshell if you do something on a frequent basis that pulls you r hair and gives some sort of strain, then you are a candidate of traction alopecia. If you find out the early signs of traction alopecia and put a stop to it, then your hair will stop fall and you should with time and patience be completely restored to its formal glory. But if the hair follicles are traumatized for such a long period of time, that it has scarred over, then the hair will not grow itself. Areas of the scalp where this has happened, look shiny. In cases of this, then you need a surgical restoration. Speak to a hair transplant surgeon to establish whether or not the traction alopecia has causes permanent scarring and to discuss surgical options to you.
