How to Sketch Voltages in Diode Circuits

In this circuit with two diodes, our objective is to find the output voltage 𝑣ₒ for a sinusoidal input voltage 𝑣ₛ = 5sin(2000𝜋t) V. We are given that the two diodes have a turn-on voltage of 0.5 V.

The key to solving such problems is to use voltage conditions to determine when each diode turns on. In this circuit, during the positive half-cycle, diode 𝐷₁ conducts once 𝑣ₛ exceeds 0.5 V, establishing a conduction path through the 100 Ω – 1 kΩ network. This introduces both a diode drop and a resistive voltage division, yielding a scaled output. For all 𝑣ₛ lower than 0.5 V (and throughout the negative half-cycle), the output remains zero due to diode blocking and clamping behavior.

It turns out that this circuit is a half-wave rectifier with some gain reduction due to the 100 Ω – 1 kΩ voltage divider.
