The Chinese New Year is the most important festival in Chinese culture. It is based on the lunar calendar and falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, which usually lands in January or February of the solar calendar. It is also called the “Spring Festival” (Chun Jie) because it marks the beginning of spring and the end of winter. Every lunar new year is represented by one of the 12 Chinese zodiac animal signs. 2022 marks the Year of the Tiger. Those born in the year of the tiger are said to be charming, brave, and competitive.

The 15th day of the Chinese New Year, also the first full moon of the lunar new year, marks the end of the new year celebration. It is also known as “Yuan Xiao Jie”, Lantern Festival or informally, “Chinese Valentine's Day”. In the past, singles would play matchmaking games on this day. As families gather to appreciate the full moon and try to guess lantern riddles, a sticky rice dessert called “Yuan Xiao” is a popular food to enjoy together. The round shape of these sweet glutinous rice balls (often with a filling) symbolizes wholeness and togetherness, so eating Yuan Xiao can bring happiness and luck for the whole family in the year ahead.
