SUHANI سھڻي - AN INDEPEDENT SHORT FILM WITH ENG SUBTITLES
Suhani سھڻي
A film by Shahdev Rahwani
Shot independently on a low-budget production, Suhani explores the enduring struggles of women within Sindh’s social fabric. Rooted in myth yet grounded in human experience, the film reflects on how cultural beliefs continue to shape - and often confine - women’s lives.
Folklore Context:
In ancient mythology, the howling of dogs at night is believed to foretell an impending death. This belief remains deeply ingrained within indigenous communities of Sindh, particularly in the region of Tharparkar, where myths and daily life exist in quiet coexistence.
Director’s Statement
My focus in this film was not the myth itself - that is a subject for another study - but the woman. Suhani stands as the central character, a woman caught at the intersection of love, loyalty, and indigenous belief systems. Her story emerged from a verse in Sur Suhani by Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai:
سِياري سِھَ راتِ ۾، جا گهِڙي وَسندي مِينهَن،
هَلو ته پُڇُون سُهڻي، جا ڪَرَ ڄاڻي نِينهَن،
جنهن کي راتو ڏِينهَن، ميهارُ ئي مَنَ ۾.
"The one who entered the river in extreme cold night and rain,
Let us go and see "Suhani", who knows how to love,
And in whose heart Mehar dwells all the time."
Always women have continually been victims - often through culture itself. Suhani drowned that day, and she continues to drown still. This film is not a conclusion, but an observation - a question left deliberately unanswered.
The film is produced by its cast and crew, under the banner of Sambara Films.
