In 1795, this cavalry regiment single-handedly captured an entire ocean fleet on horseback #history

In the winter of 1795, the French Revolutionary army achieved a military feat that sounds like a literal glitch in the matrix: men on horses conquered an ocean fleet. The Dutch Republic’s navy, consisting of 14 massive warships and dozens of merchant vessels, was anchored in the strait of Den Helder. But Europe was suffering through one of the coldest winters on record, and the sea around the ships froze solid. When French Hussars realized the enemy ships were trapped in the ice, they didn't wait for the spring thaw or naval reinforcements. In the dead of night, they muffled their horses' hooves with cloth so they wouldn't make a sound on the ice. They rode directly out onto the frozen sea and surrounded the heavily armed warships. The Dutch sailors, completely caught off guard by cavalry knocking on the sides of their boats, surrendered without a fight. It remains one of the only times in recorded history that a naval fleet was captured by a cavalry charge. #history #shorts #crazyhistory
