Make a Life not just a Living | Dan Cable | TEDxLiverpool
Our brains are emotional ‘seeking systems’ that crave meaning and connection. We are wired to explore our world, experiment and learn, and understand the impact of our actions. This is what motivates us and makes us feel alive. But sadly, since the industrial revolution most organisations were designed to shut off our seeking systems, punishing experimentation and removing our connection with customers. Now that change happens more frequently and organisations need agility with purpose, we are entering a golden age of human emotions. To survive and to thrive, organisations need to activate employees’ seeking systems rather than switch them off.
Follow Dan on @DanCable1 Sadly many of our companies and organisations are hardly inspiring places to work. Social psychologist and London Business School Professor Dan Cable argues that the reason for so much unhappiness at work is our biology. Our brains are emotional ‘seeking systems’ that crave meaning and connection. They are wired to create a natural impulse to explore our world, experiment and learn new things about the environment.
This is what motivates us and makes us feel alive. Dan explains how small changes can have meaningful impact and restore our zest for work and life. He shares examples from his newest book Alive at Work, published by Harvard Business School Press. Dan’s work also has in the Economist, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, CNBC, New York Times, and Business Week. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
