Sharks & Dolphins

An incredible day out on a Pelagic Research Dive with One Ocean Diving, highlighting some beautiful shots and imagery sharks and Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins sharing the space with some lucky guests. While sharks are the focus of our program the beauty of a pelagic dive is you never know what may decide to show up! Dolphin-shark interactions vary among species, so its nothing less than fascinating to witness these kinds of open sea relationships. Here we’ve got spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus) swimming together on one of our tours. It’s actually pretty common to find groups of sharks swimming with tuna, dolphins, and whales (Leatherwood, 1977). While some sharks feed on tuna and dolphin, other species of sharks share the same diet as tuna, dolphin, or whales and will follow them to take advantage of feeding (Carrier, Musick, Heithaus, 2004). In a study in the North Sea and South Africa, the Silky Shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) was observed competing with Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncates) over a school of fish; as more sharks appeared, the dolphins began to leave (Acevedo-Gutiérrez, 2002). In Hawai‘i, you can spot spinner dolphins with scars from Cookie-cutter sharks, which indicates the sharks may be feeding and/or competing with dolphin (Carrier, Musick, Heithaus 2004). While we don’t know for certain why these spinners and sandbars swam together, we’re happy to share the experience!
