Dogs that resource guard usually end up rehomed or dead, we get daily messages from people who have gotten pretty serious bites from dogs that resource guard just about anything that they feel is worth guarding. It is not just limited to food, bones or toys, it can be something simple as a leaf or space.

We also do not believe in exchanging what the dog is guarding with a higher value item. If you really think about it you are rewarding the dog for actually guarding the item, so dog guards the item, you go get something of higher value, and sure the dog may drop that thing they are guarding but you are actually rewarding the dog for the guarding behavior. Why is that the thought process? the guarding does not go away and it is just a matter of time before you or someone else gets bit, so this is a basic protocol that we have taught to dogs successfully thousands of times. Folks who have watched our Out video have successfully done it on their own as well.
