International Law and the War in Ukraine The Paths to Reparations
On 24 February Russian troops invaded Ukraine in blatant violation of international law.
On 2 March UN General Assembly overwhelmingly (by 141 votes) adopted a resolution demanding the Russian Federation immediately end its invasion of Ukraine and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from Ukrainian territory
However, Russia ignored that resolution and continue killing Ukrainian children, civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure and committing other crimes in Ukraine.
During the webinar we were talking about International justice, crimes and accountability of those responsible for these crimes. Accountability is important not only as a matter of justice, it is important to prevent such crimes in the future.
As his blitz krieg failed, just on the second day of the unprovoked Russian aggression, Putin (during his telephone conference with Xi Jinping) said that he is ready for high level negotiations with Ukraine.
Notably, the text of the General Assembly resolution about Russian aggression also urged the immediate peaceful resolution of the conflict through political dialogue, negotiations, mediation and other peaceful means. So we also mentioned about negotiations – as a tool to achieve the most realistic results.
