ARTEZA vs. REEVES | Affordable Gouache Comparison

Here I review and compare Arteza gouache with Reeves gouache. Includes swatches of all colors straight from the tube and from a setup palette. There’s a painting demo with the Arteza gouache at the end.

More about opacity: good quality pigments help make gouache opaque. Some pigments are naturally more opaque than others. For example, the pigment that is used for yellow ochre (in many different brands and paint types) is naturally extremely opaque. The pigment usually used for ultramarine blue is naturally transparent. This is true for many different types of paint, not just gouache. Good quality gouache should still be pretty opaque, with as little binder and filler as possible without cracking. Cheaper brands often add white to every color to make them more opaque but this can create dull colors and mixes. Another strategy is to add fillers and opacifiers but this means muddiness and less color intensity. There are appropriate times to add white and appropriate times to add fillers, but I prefer to mix these to my own liking. It is my preference that my paint has as much pigment as possible out of the tube. If I want to add white to more transparent colors I will when I do my color mixing. If I want to add a glycerin filler so my paint doesn’t crack in the palette I will add it sparingly.

Pigments used: I researched every pigment listed on the Arteza packaging (Reeves didn’t list their pigments) and I found every one of them to be standard pignments used across many brands. The pigment PW6 is just Titanium White, so any Arteza gouache tube with that listed has white added. The few that do have white added are carefully chosen, for example the Sky Blue is basically an ultramarine blue pigment and PW6. The primary colors and most other colors do not have white added and consist of only one or two pigments, which makes for cleaner colors. The bright pink doesn’t use a traditional pigment but instead a Color Index color which I looked up and its usually used for makeup so its perfectly safe and lightfast. I suspect that the Reeves uses decent pigments but uses less of them, making up for the loss of opacity with the addition of white and fillers. This is an educated guess: I do not know the exact ingredients of the Reeves (or the Arteza for that matter, but I do know which pigments they’ve used).
