Five German Fighters Hunted Him… But This P-47 Pilot Did Something Impossible.

In the summer of 1943, American fighter pilot Robert S. Johnson found himself alone at 18,000 feet with five German Messerschmitt fighters closing in behind him. Outnumbered and unable to outclimb or outturn them, he made a decision no combat manual recommended — he pointed his massive P-47 Thunderbolt straight down toward the earth. As the German fighters tried to follow, the heavy Thunderbolt accelerated faster and faster, turning a desperate escape into a lesson in physics. What looked like madness became a tactic that would later save the lives of other American pilots flying over Europe. This is the incredible true story of how math, courage, and one vertical dive changed the fight in the skies of World War II.
