Vietnam Veterans

July, 2010
What is commonly called the Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in American history, beginning with the arrival of US military advisors in Vietnam in 1950 and ending with the fall of Saigon in 1975. It exacted a huge cost of more than 4 and a half million human lives including 58,169 US troops. The stories of the Oklahomans who served in southeast Asia differ widely: from the Air Force helicopter crewman who flew missions in the mornings and spent his afternoons on the beach, to the infantry soldier who was in battle nearly every day of his tour, to the Navy nurse who saw the cost of war firsthand. The US government never officially called the conflict a war. The Vietnamese who lived through it call it "The American War." This June on OETA's award-winning Stateline program Oklahoma Vietnam veterans tell their stories of My War.
