Porsche Panamera Active Ride Suspension - AWESOME TECH FEATURE

Porsche Panamera Active Ride Suspension. Sports car and travel sedan, dynamism and comfort: this is the definition of the Porsche Panamera. For the development of the chassis, a challenge. Because optimal traction and high-performance cornering are an opposite development goal to driving comfort. And viceversa. #porsche #development #suspension

In the new Panamera, the optional Porsche Active Ride chassis resolves this conflict. Porsche worked for six years on the system thanks to which the new Panamera adapts to any situation. It compensates for irregularities in the road surface by isolating them. At the same time, it transmits a particularly direct driving experience by showing the right elasticity and creating an intimate contact with the road. «Despite being incredible in controlling the car body, on the track the car adheres perfectly to the asphalt», explains Ingo Albers, head of driving systems for Porsche. The set-up changes depending on the driving mode (Normal, Sport and Sport Plus), but the advantages of the system are felt in all three.

Not to mention that the chassis brings with it new solutions: pitch and roll are automatically repressed in all driving modes. Which means that the bodywork remains oriented horizontally. Furthermore, it adapts the distribution of the load on the wheel to the level of grip and, in Sport Plus mode, lowers the chassis in fast corners, resulting in greater traction in every situation. At the push of a button, the innovative chassis is able to overcompensate for body movements. After that, the Panamera corners like a motorcycle. Or it behaves like a helicopter, moving the trim forward when accelerating and backwards when slowing down, to make passages more pleasant. The system can also raise the body to make it easier to get in and out of the car.

Freedom of movement for maximum comfort
The structure is not comparable to traditional frames. Typically, stabilizers stiffen the axle, reducing vehicle roll. With Porsche Active Ride, the automaker gives up on that. This allows the Panamera, for example, to compensate for an irregularity in the road ahead on the left, without transmitting the movement to the bodywork or the front right shock absorber.

In doing so, engineers gain freedom to increase comfort. However, the rolls must be absorbed elsewhere. In traditional chassis, it is the suspensions that dampen the oscillations of the bodywork. In the new one, the active suspensions do more: the system stabilizes the vehicle by managing the wheels individually. It can, for example, crush one to the ground or retract it into the wheel arch very quickly. For this purpose, each suspension is equipped with an electric hydraulic pump that pushes the oil through a circuit in the shock absorber with high pressure, thus actively managing the extension and compression of the springs. The reaction of the shock absorber is decided by the control system using sensors, which analyze the accelerations of the wheels and chassis, as well as the movements of the bodywork and suspension. Unlike camera-based systems, this one works in all visibility and road conditions.
