Seascape Watercolour Tutorial

I visited Cronulla the other morning and it was windy and raining! Just beautiful! This painting was from that experience. The way I love to paint is to respond to inspiration I see in my day to day life then put that down on paper! I love moody seascapes and so in this seascape watercolour tutorial I suppose you get to see where I was and really get to be there and then see what I paint from that. From my point of view it is less important to paint exactly what I saw and more important to capture the feeling and the mood of that place at that moment in time.

Thanks for watching!

The colours I used were: the warms at the beginning were yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light and a bit of raw umber. I then used the mix of cobalt blue and light red for the sky with some paynes grey mixed in. I then used cobalt turquoise and paynes grey for the sea as well as the mix of cobalt blue and light red then raw umber and yellow ochre for the sand. I used the razor blade with a metal ruler to lift out the lights.

It was painted on a half sheet 40cm high by 60cm wide Rives BFK Arches etching paper 280gsm

I mostly used my hake brush, spray bottle and the pure kolinsky round sable just at the end.

Enjoy!
