The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, 1942 - Animated (ALL PARTS)

The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was a four-day series of air and sea engagements fought around the Solomon Islands from November 12 to 15, 1942. This complete animated documentary reconstructs every major phase of the battle as American and Japanese forces fought for control of Guadalcanal and the strategically vital Henderson Field.

The fighting began with Japanese air attacks and a chaotic nighttime clash in Ironbottom Sound. American cruisers and destroyers suffered devastating losses, but they disrupted Japan’s planned bombardment. Aircraft later attacked the damaged battleship Hiei and the approaching troop transports. During the final night action, USS Washington and USS South Dakota confronted a Japanese force centered on the battleship Kirishima.

South Dakota suffered electrical failures and came under concentrated Japanese fire, while Washington used radar-directed gunfire to strike Kirishima at close range. The Japanese battleship was mortally damaged, and the remaining transports were destroyed or forced ashore before they could deliver most of their troops and equipment. The victory prevented Japan from neutralizing Henderson Field and marked a decisive shift in the Guadalcanal Campaign.

Watch the complete animated reconstruction to follow the ships, commanders, tactical decisions, and turning points of this brutal naval struggle. Subscribe for more World War II naval battles, full animated campaigns, Pacific War history, and detailed military documentaries.
