How do the Formula 1 tyre compounds work?

For years the Formula 1 tyres have been confusing and overly complicated and despite changes in recent years they remain slightly difficult to understand. From C1 to C3 to ultra-soft there are so many different types of tyres so we thought we'd try and explain how some of these work and what the purpose of each tyre is.
