Gas Pressure Test on a GENERAC Generator
The gas pressure test that I am performing is on a 17 KW GENERAC home standby generator. The only special tool that is needed would be a manometer. Its function is to measure low pressures; usually in the inches water column range. Most of the hose adapters for connecting the manometer would be 1/8 inch male iron pipe on one side and a barbed end on the other, sized to fit into the flexible hose. This particular unit is running on propane. If it was running on natural gas 5-7 inches w.c. is what the manufacturer recommends. One pound of pressure is equal to 28 inches water column. The pressures are low so it is critical to have it right. On generators with a dual fuel capability it’s important to double check that the unit is switched to the correct fuel and noted in the menu during the initial installation setup. The unit I was working on had erratic readings which eventually led me to a defect at the propane supplier’s regulator. The regulator was replaced. According to the home owner the gas pressure was not checked with a manometer by the propane supplier. This is sloppy work. When I checked it was a little over but decided to run it before getting the supplier back. Gas pressure is important and should always be checked when experiencing fuel related problems. It’s easy to do. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications for your particular unit. I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.
