The three stories follow Rinko as she grows from 12 to 15 years of age in the early 1930s as a first generation American, a “nisei”, in those pre-World War II years. While the stories emanate from her experiences caught between Japanese and American cultures, they are, nevertheless, the universal experiences of immigration and assimilation. Twelve-year-old Rinko is looking forward to her summer vacation. But when her mother asks her to spend months helping Mrs. Hata, a recently widowed friend, Rinko is sure her summer will be ruined. Rinko’s friends have told her that Mrs. Hata is crazy but by the end of the summer, Rinko has discovered that people are not always what they seem.
