Airplane Graveyards - Victorville and Mojave

In 2007 I visited the airplane graveyards of Victorville and Mojave, both in the Mojave desert north of Los Angeles. After we finished our visit, we got into our little Cessna 152 which was older than most of the airliners at the graveyard and turned the key - and the engine wouldn't start. It seemed like our little plane wanted to retire here with its friends.
We eventually got it started and taxied to the beginning of the long runway. We accelerated along the runway but after we lifted off we found that it could barely climb at 200ft/min due to a combination of the plane's small engine, the altitude and the heat. We turned south towards Los Angeles but there was no way we could get over the mountain range into the valley, so we circled for about 10 minutes (making extremely wide turns to avoid losing what little vertical speed we could get). Eventually we were high enough to cross and as soon as we got overhead we reduced power and glided all the way down to El Monte airport on the other side.
