Acrolein Test Performance

PURPOSE OF TEST:
This test is used to identify pure glycerol. Glycerol is a trihydric alcoholic lipid. It occurs in state in combine state as glycerol esters. Glycerol in lipids makes esters with fatty acids.
REAGENTS & GLASSWARES:
1. Solid potassium hydrogen sulphate
2. Pure glycerol
3. Test tubes, test tube stands, test tube holder, distilled water, pipette with sucker, beakers and graduated cylinder.
PROCEDURE:
1. Take two neat test tubes and label them T (test sample) and C (control).
2. Add 3 drops of distilled water in test tube C and 3 drops of glycerol in test tube T with the help of pipette.
3. Add pinch of solid potassium hydrogen sulphate in both test tubes and mix well and heat strongly over small flame.
INTERPRETATION:
• A pungent smell in test tube T indicates the presence of glycerol in test tube T.
• No pungent smell is formed in the test tube C containing water shows that results are negative.
PRINCIPLE:
On heating with potassium hydrogen sulphate the glycerol become dehydrated to produce dehydrated aldehyde which is called as acrolein with pungent smell. This is because KHSO4 is strong dehydrating agent.
