In 2003, NASA sent two rovers, Opportunity (also known as MER-B and nicknamed Oppy) and Spirit, to Mars as part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission. They launched a few weeks apart and landed on opposite sides of the planet's equator in January 2004. The rovers were designed to study the geology of Mars and determine if it had ever been capable of supporting life. To do this, they looked for evidence of water on the planet's surface. Opportunity used its rock grinding tool to wear away the surface of rocks and took microscopic images of the resulting voids. Analysis of the remaining rock revealed the presence of hydroxide ions, indicating that water had been present when the rock formed. The rover also found thousands of small, iron oxide-rich rocks, known as "blueberries," which further supported the presence of water. Oppy traveled to Endurance Crater at a top speed of 5 cm per second and ultimately operated for over 8 Martian years, or 15 Earth years, far exceeding its original 90 sol mission length.
