Squeezing through Buddha’s nostril in Japan! #history #japan #buddha
At the Todai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan, pilgrims and tourists attempt to squeeze through a small hole in a pillar - measuring about 30cm by 32cm - in order to get good luck and enlightenment. The hole is referred to as Buddha's nostril. The Todai-ji Temple dates back to the 8th century CE, not long after Buddhism was introduced to Japan and adopted by the emperor as the state religion alongside Shintoism. TV historian Tony McMahon visited Japan in March and April 2026.
