Ada lima subspesies racoon dog, termasuk spesies Jepang (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) yang terkenal dengan sebutan tanuki. Sekilas, tanuki memang mirip rakun apalagi bentuk wajahnya, bedanya tanuki tidak memiliki ekor bercorak cincin. dan tanuki tidak memiliki kaki depan yang lentik seperti rakun.

Tanuki dapat tumbuh sekitar lebih dari 1 meter, mereka memiliki berat sekitar 2 sampai 4 kg di musim semi dan menjadi lebih dari 7kg di musim gugur. Alasan utama perbedaan berat tubuh itu adalah karena tanuki berhibernasi selama musim dingin. Dan mereka adalah satu-satunya canid di dunia yang melakukannya.
