Mercer head football coach Mike Jacobs leaving the team, hired by Toledo as next head coach

One of the greatest head coaches in Mercer football history is leaving Macon.

On Wednesday, head coach Mike Jacobs was announced as the next head coach at Toledo.

"My family and I are humbled and honored to lead the University of Toledo's storied football program," Jacobs said in a release. "We are looking forward to being a part of Team Toledo and helping this program achieve new heights."

Jacobs led the Bears to some of their greatest seasons in the team's history. In just his first season at the helm in 2024, Jacobs led Mercer to its first-ever conference championship and helped the team reach the third round of the FCS playoffs.

Jacobs replicated that success in 2025, going undefeated in SoCon play, clinching back-to-back conference titles. He also secured another second-round home playoff game. However, the Bears lost to South Dakota 47-0.

"Coach Jacobs has led the Mercer football program to unprecedented success over the last two years with back-to-back Southern Conference championships and we are incredibly grateful for his leadership," Director of Athletics Jim Cole said. "We want to thank him for the impact that he has had on Mercer, and we wish him and his family the very best. BearNation cannot thank him enough."
