Parents Merged My Wedding With Sister’s Anniversary (I Left Them The Bill)
The Swan in the Kitchen
The linen napkin on my plate was folded into a swan. I stared at it while voices swirled around me in the dining room. My stepmother, Destiny, was explaining the seating arrangement to the Senator.
"Brin sits here by Senator Gilmore," she announced, her voice slicing through the air. "And Cameron will be beside Dean Hanks."
I was 39 years old. I hadn't lived in this house for twenty years, yet I was instantly 14 again—the spare, the remnant.
"Jolie," a young caterer whispered, touching my elbow. "There's a seat here if you'd like. We have extra."
I smiled at her. "Thank you. I'm fine standing."
Through the service window, I heard Destiny projecting her voice so I wouldn't miss a word. "Government work," she was saying to the table. "Very stable, I'm sure. Though Jolie has never been clear about what she does. Something administrative. You know how bureaucracy is."
I watched them eat the Scottish salmon while I stood over a plate of staff food. I could have told them I hadn't eaten farmed salmon in fifteen years. I could have told them that three U.S. Presidents received my briefings personally. But when I’d told Destiny I was recruited by the DEA years ago, she’d just said, "How wonderful. Good benefits."
My phone buzzed. A text from my second-in-command: Situation critical. Vargas cartel shipment intercepted. Lethal dose precursors confirmed.
It was my operation. My strategy. And I was standing in a kitchen because my stepmother decided I wasn't impressive enough for her table.
"Jolie!" Destiny called out. "Come here a moment."
I walked to the doorway. The Senator looked up politely. "I told him you work for the government," Destiny said with a tight smile. "Something with records?"
"Public service is admirable," the Senator said kindly. "We need dedicated people in every role."
"Yes," I said quietly. "Every role."
I returned to the kitchen. My phone rang. "Boss," my deputy said. "The cartel has a hit out. Tonight. On Senator Gilmore."
I froze. Through the window, the Senator was laughing.
"Get me his security detail," I ordered. "And authorize the transport." I sent three texts: one to my team, one to the Deputy Director, and one that triggered a Level 5 security alert on the Senator's personal device.
In the dining room, the Senator's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and went ghost white. He stood up immediately, knocking his chair back.
He walked straight toward the back of the house. Toward the kitchen. Toward the woman they thought was a filing clerk.
"Administrator Banister," Senator Gilmore said, his voice shaking.
The conversation in the dining room died. Destiny followed him, confused.
"I apologize for the interruption," the Senator said, looking only at me. "Homeland Security just alerted me. They intercepted the hit. They tell me this operation has been yours from the beginning."
Destiny’s mouth opened. No sound came out.
"Administrator," the Dean stammered. "We weren't told."
"No one asked," I said.
I looked at Destiny, then at the Senator. "You'll need to leave. Your security detail will be here in eight minutes."
"Of course," he said, bowing his head. "Thank you. I owe you my life."
He left. My father finally found his voice. "Jolie... you're the DEA Administrator?"
"Yes."
"You let us think..." Brin started.
"I told you I worked for the federal government," I cut him off. "You filled in the blanks because it was easier than imagining I might be something else."
"We had a Senator in our home," Destiny hissed, trying to regain control. "And you embarrassed us."
"I saved his life," I said. "Your dinner party was on a cartel surveillance list. The only reason he is alive is because I authorized the operation from your kitchen."
I picked up my bag. "I have a national security situation to manage."
I walked out the back door into the driveway. A black Suburban pulled up, lights flashing. Agent Fiero stepped out. "Administrator, we're ready."
I sat in the car and let myself breathe. Through the window, I saw my family standing in the kitchen, small and confused. I realized I didn't need them to see me anymore. The world saw me.
"Let's go," I said. "We have work to do."
As we drove away, I didn't look back.
