Nikon D3 and Why I Bought a 12 megapixel DSLR in 2018.

The Nikon D3 is a still a great camera to use professionally in 2018. It's great in low light, faster than Usain Bolt, and it is said to be more rugged and durable than the D4 or D5.

My other prospects were the Nikon D800/810 and the D750. Now these newer cameras have newer technology and more megapixels. However, bigger is not always better. The 810 and its 36 megapixels are wonderful but I think it's overkill for what I need. I don't need those huge files. I am not printing billboard size prints. Not even 20x30s but the D3 can print to 20x30 no problem from what I understand. The D3 is better in low light and focuses faster.

The D750 has a 24 megapixel sensor which is almost twice that of the D3. The D750 probably has better detail in the shadows and can shoot in the dark, it shoots video and has a flash, it has a tilting screen, wifi, etc. But lets be practical. Who shoots at ISO 52,000 without a light? I don't need wifi, I don't need video, I don't need a tilting screen or any of that other stuff. Yea those features are nice but I prefer a camera that feels like a tank and is more enjoyable to hold and shoot. Did I mention the D3 can be had for about $700? The D800 are going for about a $1,000 and the 750 $1,400.

Lets be real. Camera manufactuers are in the business of selling cameras. They need to add new features and give you more megapixels to compel you to buy the latest and greatest.
