Views from the Gothic Temple at Painshill Park, Cobham, Surrey

From this folly you can admire one of the best views in Surrey. 
The ten-sided building was constructed of timber and rendered to resemble stone. Five of the sides are panelled halfway up to direct the visitor’s eye to the open sides, which perfectly frame the picture-like scene. 
When King George III visited, he declared that the view from the Gothic Temple was his favourite view.

You can see the landscape falling away dramatically down to the Serpentine lake. At the far end of the lake, beyond the original Five-Arch Bridge, the land rises and through the trees were glimpsed the Hermitage, temple of Bacchus, Turkish Tent and, high above them the Gothic Tower on the horizon.
