The Su-33 was built for one mission: operate from the Kuznetsov in seas that would ground every other carrier aviation in the world.

A navalised derivative of the Su-27 Flanker, the Su-33 features folding wings, a reinforced undercarriage, an arrester hook, and canards for short-field performance. It flew combat sorties from the Kuznetsov during the Mediterranean deployment and Syria operations — the only carrier-based fixed-wing aircraft Russia has ever put into combat. The Soviet naval aviation tradition, carried forward.
