Operations #3.1 Turning

Introduction to turning operations on the mini lathe. This segment covers "short" turning: work that is short enough to be held in the chuck without tailstock support. See important note below...

One important fact that I forgot to mention: On many versions of the mini lathe, the lead screws on the cross-slide and compound are 1mm thread pitch but the dials are calibrated in increments of 40 labelled as thousandths of an inch. Because 1" equals exactly 25.4mm, each rotation of the handwheel actually moves the slide by 0.03937" rather than 0.04000". If you're moving the slide by less than 10 divisions, the discrepancy is so small that it usually can be ignored, but when moving the slide by more than 10 divisions it starts to become noticeable.

Fortunately, the effect is that you will advance the slide by less than you expect, so the part will be oversize, which is easy to correct. Just be sure to take accurate measurements with your caliper or micrometer as you approach the target diameter and adjust accordingly.
