How to install RedHat enterprise 8.1 Linux on hyper-v

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) on Hyper-V, follow these steps:

Prerequisites:
Hyper-V installed on a Windows machine (usually Windows Server or Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education).
RHEL installation ISO file (you can download it from the Red Hat Customer Portal after purchasing a subscription or use a trial version).
Steps to Install RHEL on Hyper-V:
1. Create a New Virtual Machine in Hyper-V
Open Hyper-V Manager.
On the right side, click New and select Virtual Machine.
Click Next to proceed with the New Virtual Machine Wizard.
2. Configure the Virtual Machine
Name: Give your VM a name (e.g., "RHEL_VM").
Generation: Select Generation 1 (or Generation 2 if you plan to use UEFI boot, but for RHEL, Generation 1 is generally easier).
Memory: Allocate RAM to the VM. A minimum of 2 GB is recommended for RHEL.
Network Adapter: Connect the virtual machine to the appropriate virtual switch (ensure the virtual switch is connected to your network or the internet).
Virtual Hard Disk: Create a new virtual hard disk. You can specify the size of the disk (e.g., 20 GB or more depending on your needs).
Installation Options: Choose to install from ISO image and browse to the RHEL ISO file you downloaded.
3. Set Up Virtual Machine Settings
Right-click the VM you just created in Hyper-V Manager, and click Settings.
Under Processor, increase the number of processors or cores if needed (usually 1 is enough for a basic installation).
In the DVD Drive settings, select the ISO file for Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation.
Under Network Adapter, ensure it’s connected to your network for internet access during installation.
4. Start the Virtual Machine
Right-click the virtual machine and select Start.
Click on Connect to open the VM window.
5. Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Once the VM boots, you should see the RHEL installation screen.
Select Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux from the options.
Choose your language and region, then click Continue.
6. Partitioning and Disk Setup
Choose the Installation Destination.
Select the virtual hard disk you created and configure the partitions (you can use automatic partitioning for simplicity or manually partition if you have specific requirements).
7. Network Configuration
Configure your network settings (hostname, network interfaces, etc.). You may need to configure your network connection if it's not set to Automatic.
8. Set User and Root Password
Set the root password and create a user account with administrative (sudo) rights.
9. Begin Installation
After completing all the configuration steps, click Begin Installation.
The installation process will begin, and this may take some time.
10. Complete Installation
Once the installation finishes, click Reboot.
Make sure to remove the installation ISO from the virtual CD/DVD drive in the VM settings to avoid booting from it again.
11. Post-Installation Configuration
After rebooting, complete any post-installation tasks such as:
Activate your subscription (using subscription-manager).
Install updates using dnf or yum.
Install additional software as needed.
12. Login to RHEL
Log in using the username and password you set up during installation.
Start using Red Hat Enterprise Linux!
Additional Tips:
If you're using a Generation 2 VM, you may need to enable UEFI boot and other related settings in Hyper-V.
Make sure Hyper-V is configured with sufficient resources (like CPU, RAM, and disk space) to ensure good performance during the installation.
That's it! You should now have Red Hat Enterprise Linux running on Hyper-V.
