How we locate plastic water pipes

In this video, Ben Minutoli, manager of Geelong Cable Locations, use an acoustic locator, to locate the position of a poly water pipe from the water meter, that is in the garden at the front of the property, through to the house.

Using is cable and pipe locator, he had first already located, the underground power cable, telephone cable, and gas pipe, that were all going from the street to the house. But when he then tried to find the water pipe he found he could not induce a signal onto the utility, which means the pipe must have been plastic and would not be locatable.

Next, he tried the ground-penetrating radar. We can generally get good results when looking for water pipes with the radar, but unfortunately today, on this site, the radar was not able to see this service.

So he then got out the acoustic locator and also decided to set up the camera, as back then when we did this job, we didn't have any footage of the acoustic locator in use, so thought this might be a good site to capture it on.
Plus, its also a good example, to show that, although we may sometimes have trouble finding some underground services, there is always more than one way to locate any particular underground utility.
