1944: BATTLE FOR THE SCHELDT

A pivotal battle in the campaign to liberate Western Europe from the Nazis, and Canada's toughest fight of the war. In October 1944, the Allies face a desperate supply crisis in Northwest Europe. Despite capturing the port of Antwerp, fuel, ammunition, and reinforcements still have to come ashore on the distant D-Day beaches in Normandy. To end the crisis, the Allies need to open Antwerp to the sea—but first they must clear the Scheldt Estuary of its German defenders.

This brutal campaign became one of the most difficult battles of World War II. Canadian forces, supported by British and Polish troops, fought across flooded fields, dykes, and mud against determined German resistance. Victory in the Battle of the Scheldt would secure Antwerp’s harbour and provide the vital lifeline that powered the Allied advance into Germany.

Join us as we explore the strategy, challenges, and sacrifices that made the Battle of the Scheldt a decisive moment in the final year of WWII.
