LCM and HCF|| Sindh Text|| Exercise 2.1|| #mathematics

HCF stands for Highest Common Factor. It is the largest number that exactly divides two or more numbers without leaving a remainder.

For example:
The HCF of 12 and 18 is 6.
Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
Common factors: 1, 2, 3, 6
Highest common factor: 6

Other names for HCF are:
GCD (Greatest Common Divisor)
GCF (Greatest Common Factor)

1️⃣ Prime Factorization Method
Break each number into its prime factors.
Find the common prime factors.
Multiply the common prime factors to get the HCF.
Example: Find HCF of 48 and 60.
48 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 (or 2⁴ × 3¹)
60 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 (or 2² × 3¹ × 5¹)
Common prime factors: 2² and 3¹.
HCF = 2² × 3¹ = 4 × 3 = 12
