Introducing UCI’s VSA 24th Annual Rose pageant!

Say hello to rose #16 Kaitlyn Vu

I reflect on my heritage and identity through art. My grandma was the
first person who introduced me to painting, and ever since, I've been
captivated by how much a single brush stroke can convey. Due to my
upbringing as a second-generation Asian American, I often feel
disconnected from my culture as I can’t speak the language. Many of my familial relationships have been hindered by my inability to speak
Vietnamese, and it’s something I’ve always been ashamed of.
However, even with the language barrier between my grandma and I,
we still enjoy each other’s company and connect through art. With
every minute I spend with her, my appreciation for my heritage
deepens. Through art, I’ve discovered that the bond of culture goes
beyond language, and instead, it resides in something much deeper.
By reflecting on my grandma’s past as well as on my inner
individuality, I can maintain the balance between the Vietnamese and American parts of me.
