PM MODI'S ITALY VISIT - WHY THIS VISIT MATTERS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Rome, Italy on May 19, 2026, for the final stop of his five-nation tour. During this visit, PM Modi met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and is scheduled to hold official talks at Villa Doria Pamphili on May 20, 2026.

The biggest focus of this visit is strengthening India-Italy relations and upgrading ties to a Special Strategic Partnership. Both countries are expected to discuss trade, defence, AI, clean energy, science, maritime transport, agriculture, education, critical minerals, and financial crime control.

One of the most important topics is the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, also known as IMEC. This proposed trade route can connect India with the Middle East and Europe, helping boost trade and connectivity. India and Italy also aim to increase bilateral trade to €20 billion by 2029.
