Finding Himalayan Brown Bear in Deosai | Peak of Giant | Sheosar Lake | Deosai | Land of the Giants

Himalayan Brown Bears are at risk of extinction. But there is still hope for the survival of her breed and its habitat in Deosai National Park, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.

Deosai means 'Land of the Giants' and it is the second highest plateaus in the world. Deosai National Park (DNP) protects an area of 3000 square kilometers. This park considered as the last sanctuary of brown bear and also home of Himalayan ibex, red fox, golden marmot, gray wolf, snow leopard and over 124 resident & migratory birds. In spring, Deosai covered by wide variety of wildflowers and in winter it is covered by heavy snow.

This vLog (travelogue video) covers our travelling to Deosai, trekking above 4100m from sea level to summit peak of the giants and chasing the brown bears, other wild animals like golden marmot, weasel and some birds.

We arrived at Deosai, to see the brown bear with naked eyes in his habitat. While entering the Deosai from Astore side, at very first you will see the Heart shape lake 'Sheosar'. Near the lake we saw some horses in the swampy area. They look like wild horses and after photographing them we went to the 'Kala Pani' camp site. (Kala Pani means Black Water in Urdu.)

Overnight we did Astro photography and in the morning after photographing some birds of Deosai we started the 'Mission Brown Bear'. The whole team was looking for a bear. We checked out several Marshes because bears live in those marshes. But still we did not find any bear, we just found few signs of a running bear's paw, somewhere a bear's dung and somewhere there were signs that the bear was sleeping here.

Finally, after a lot of hard work and trekking, suddenly two bears were seen at a distance of seven to eight hundred meters. We started, taking pictures and making videos of them so they ran away. After that we went on in search of more bears and also to summit 'peak of the Giant' which is also known as 'Wolf Peak'. At least it was difficult for me to climb the mountain at such high altitude. Well, at last we reached the top of the hill. And from the top all around there was a spectacular view of Deosai. Deosai was visible to the very end.

After descending the hill, we saw another bear farther away. Now this time, we moved very silently and approached the bear while hiding. We did some Photography & Videography. Finally, we said 'Good bye' to the brown bears and returned to our homes with many beautiful memories and pictures.
