🧬💻 Cancer diagnosis using algorithms 💻🧬

The prick of a needle, a few drops of blood – and a learning algorithm. Researchers at the PSI Paul Scherrer Institut are combining microscopy, cell biology, and artificial intelligence to detect subtle changes in the cell nucleus.

What makes this special: The AI recognises patterns in chromatin – compactly packed genetic material in the cell nucleus, which undergoes changes in cancer even before symptoms can be seen. This could open new avenues in the early detection of cancer and in monitoring therapeutic treatments. PSI researcher G.V. Shivashankar and his team show how research and computing power are working together – to enable the diagnostics of the future.
