2019 Winnebago Travato 59KL Review | Just How Much Lithium Power Does the Volta System Need?

If you've got an extra $25k burning a hole in your pocket you can upgrade from the Travato 59k to the 59KL. Is it worth it?

Apart from smaller grey water and black water tanks; around 400lbs less in cargo carrying capacity and a $25k price difference the Travato 59KL is identical to its electrically challenged little brother the 59K. They have exactly the same layouts, build quality and limited 1 year warranty. All the differences lie in the 59KL's electrical system. But what an electrical system it is!

The Pure 3 energy system as Winnebago calls it is a rebranded all-in-one integrated system by Volta and that's a great thing. Volta has been around for years and knows how to build lithium battery packs, inverters, battery monitoring systems and an array of other electrical system components that are necessary in today's cutting edge RV energy systems. By partnering with Volta, Winnebago gets to focus on what it does best: design and build RVs while leaving the highly specialized skill of building and supporting lithium energy systems to the professionals. This in itself should give any enterprising buyer a feeling of confidence that the Pure 3 system will live up to expectations and be reliable.

As far as expectations, the Pure 3 system has a 10,000 watt-hr, 8700 watt-hrs of which are usable. Kudos to Winnebago for not advertising the maximum 10k battery capacity as other RV manufacturers would do. The big news about the Pure 3 system is that it is has a 3600 watt inverter capable of delivering a constant 30 amps of current. That's like being plugged into shore power all the time which in turn means that you're never going to have to really think about what AC appliances you have running. Winnebago says that you can run the AC off batteries for up to 8 hours but it's more likely to be 6. No problem however because there's a 54 volt second alternator under the hood that's capable of delivering 6000w of recharge power to the battery pack. That means if you're driving down the road you can recharge a completely empty battery pack in about 1.5 hours. If you're not driving down the road you can program the remote start to automatically start the van and high idle if the state of charge (SOC) reaches a minimum level. The nice thing is that unlike EcoTrek by Roadtrek, the Volta system uses a proper SOC as a trigger and not an unreliable voltage reading. And there are no limits to the number of times that remote can be used consequtively although high idle isn't as quiet as most people would like to believe - so you're not going to be using it at night when you're parked at a campground.

The Volta system is the most advanced lithium energy systems available on the market today but is it worth it? For most people no, it's not. The truth is that the vast majority of us don't need to run the air conditioning for the length of time needed to justify the expense. A much smaller capacity lithium pack will meet 99% of most our needs but unfortunately Winnebago doesn't offer a smaller battery capacity - it's all or nothing. The $25k premium for the Volta system is just too high a premium for the convenience of running your AC off batteries. For most of us, we can get by with a smalller battery capacity and run the generator when we're not plugged into shore power and need to run the AC.

I applaude Winnebago for taking the jump into lithium but they would have been better served offering a smaller but less expensive battery pack as a Travato upgrade.
