Wild horse rescue
May 6th, 2020 Sundre Alberta
Went out to check on one of the baby wild horses I photographed the other day near Sundre. Apparently mom went missing the day after I was there, so now we have a little orphan :( Dad is doing a good job of protecting the little one. I just hope he can keep it safe. ( I went through photos when I got home and think I found her body in one of them ) will go check back this week. 😥
While coming back from up the mountain I noticed a lone mare out in the field. Thought it was strange she didn't spook or run off from the sound of the machines seeing that she was alone.
I took a picture with my long lens and thought she's either giving birth (looked like she was lying down ) or stuck. Couldn't tell from that distance. I raced up the road to get the other 2 that had gone ahead and told them we need to go check it out. Thank God we did. Boy she was stuck!!! We had just passed a black bear feasting on another young horse about a mile back and passed a grizzly shortly before this girl. She was cold and scared and clearly thankful to see us. She wouldn't have made it through the night :(
Funny thing. We were supposed to take another trail but ended up here. Right place right time for her. Hope she finds her herd and is going to be OK.
Some folks don't want these horses out there and say they have no natural predators. That was proven untrue today and they also have a whole lots of other crap to deal with and alot don't make it. (The pit we found her in was a grave yard of bones ) 😢😢
I now see the importance of being prepared for anything when you're heading out to the hills.
