Who is Grace Hopper?

Grace Hopper thought the people actually doing the work understood it better than anyone sitting above them, and she built her career around that idea. COBOL came out of her belief that programmers shouldn't have to rely on a small group of gatekeepers to get things done. She wanted the tools to be accessible, so more people could use them without asking anyone's approval.

She was also genuinely impatient with rules that existed for no clear reason, and she said so openly. The counterclockwise clock she kept on her wall was her way of making the point that just because something has always been done one way doesn't mean it has to stay that way. She encouraged people to try things, question what they were told, and not wait around for permission that might never come.
